On April 17th at 12:35pm. Talleyville was alerted for a fire alarm at 101 School Rd in Alapocas. 25-7 responded immediately and while enroute, fireboard advised they were receiving calls reporting smoke in the building and re-dispatched the call as a box alarm. 25-7 was on scene with smoke showing from the roof area and Captain Christopher Leach established the Talleyville command. The staff at Friends school did an amazing job of accounting for their students and confirmed for command within minutes that all students were safe and accounted for. Units operated for hours to bring the blaze under control:
Fire photographer and news contributor Lou Angeli arrived shortly after 25-7 and had the following observation of the fire:
Two firefighters were taken to area hospitals for evaluation, but all students were reported safe and accounted for after a major fire broke out this afternoon in the auditorium area of Wilmington Friends School in Alapocas.
The fire, reported at about 12:35 p.m., reached three alarms and scores of firefighters battled the blaze for 2 and a half hours.
Flames shot out of the roof and firefighters were evacuated from the building minutes before a portion of the roof collapsed. The heavy smoke could be seen for miles.
Fire companies from Delaware and Pennsylvania responded to the Alapocas sub-division, which borders the City of Wilmington. WFD dispatched a Ladder and Engine Company along with Deputy Chief of Operations.
The fire was reported under control at 3:02 p.m.
My wife Patty and I arrived behind the first-due Quint 25-7, as our home is just a mile from the school. From the house we could see the loom up of smoke.
